The idea of a permanent home – a place that becomes a part of your identity – has always felt totally unnatural to me. It’s hard to imagine early humans having any desire to “settle down,” what with everything that was out there waiting to drag you, screaming, into the night. Best to just keep moving.
But, if I’ve ever met anyone who embodied their place of origin, that someone is probably “New ‘Round Here” storyteller Randall Ross. Randall was a Texan through and through before relocating to Shreveport with his equally fascinating wife, Molly. Just looking at him, you think: If I follow this man long enough, he will lead me to outlaws, tequila and good brisket.
Randall’s story, which we’ve dubbed “The Articulated Dream,” unfolds in his sexy Texas drawl, explaining he and Molly’s decision to uproot themselves from Austin, Tx., and “start anew” in Shreveport, La. We love this story, not just because it provides a highly entertaining, newcomers’ perspective on Shreveport, but also because Randall has a preternatural gift with pacing, breathing and letting words hang in the air like a gunfighter’s challenge.
Thank you, Randy and Molly, for sharing the power of the articulated dream.
Today, the good folks at Centenary College of Louisiana posted this wonderful story about “Under the Influence,” a live storytelling event that we’ll be hosting at Marjorie Lyons Playhouse on the campus of Centenary College of Louisiana at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 13, 2014. Tickets are still available and can be purchased here. All proceeds benefit the Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse of Northwest Louisiana. If you’re planning on attending, please buy tickets in advance – we anticipate a sell-out.
I love the juxtaposition of Shreveport and Hawaii… the power of the articulated dream! Love it and you guys! Dan
This is a must share. Your capacity for telling a story was the 1st thing i noticed about you, way back in the Guild days.
