Chris grew up in Springhill, Louisiana – a town whose high school mascot is was the lumberjacks with a total population teetering right above 5,000. When his parents were teenagers in 1974, nightlife was different. Young folks hopped in cars, then drove up and down the main street, honking and waving at one another. Occasionally, they pulled over into the Piggly Wiggly parking lot to drink a few beers, smoke cigarettes, hold hands and other courting rituals.
Once a year, the city hosts one evening where folks can relive these glory days to celebrate high school reunions and as a fundraiser for something… no one ever asked us for money! We tagged along and taped over an hour of audio. Here’s the highlights.
On a side note, a quick Google search turns up this news story from Springhill:
It was still legal circa 2003…”The Parking Lot” was still quite populated before the laws came down. I’ve seen many a fight and spectacle in that parking lot…it saddens me to watch Springhill slowly depopulate over the years. 🙁
I loved this ‘Ride for Life’ event. This was it’s 4th year. The funds raised by the various events are distributed to different groups in town. And of course, classes scheduled reunions and plan to drag Main. Unfortunately, my class of 1951 never Dragged Main.. None of us had cars……and your folks weren’t inclined to loan you their cars. Believe it or not….we mostly walked.. to go to the movies. or should I say, the picture show.
Since consolidation we lost our 101 years of Springhill High School history. We, a group of SHS graduates, are working on a memorial site on Main St. It will be the Springhill High School Lumberjack Park. It will be a place where these folks of Dragging Main and other reunions can come to remember the good times at Springhill High School. Hope to be finished by July of 2015.
I was part of that era, I did my share of dragging main, but most of the time, we would end up at the mill pond to drag race the 1/4 mile, sometimes for pinks, cash, or just for the helluv it, we had a lot a fun back then, really miss those days
I never drank any beer in the Piggly Wiggly parking lot. I also never went to any keg parties in the Mill Ponds. This all sounds so crazy that people would ride around in Springhill and drink. There was always so many other things to do in Springhill. Crazy.
In all seriousness, my mom told me a story about someone driving a Judge into the Mill Ponds while drag racing out there!
